Here we go! The transition from Fall to Winter is so exciting! Moving away from pumpkins and leaves and welcoming the smell of pine, apple, cinnamon and woodsy décor and scents.
We all tend to overthink decorating for the holidays, but it’s not supposed to be intimidating and stressful; it is meant to be a fun and enjoyable experience, so before you start decorating, set the mood! Get yourself some hot tea, coffee, matcha or whatever cozy beverage will set the mood for you. Light a Christmas scented candle and set the lighting in the house to levels that allow you to see what you are working on, but also lowered levels to create that Christmas ambiance that we all love! Lastly, put on the music that represents the holidays for you.
Once you have set the stage for a successful and fun decorating day, lets begin.
Hang Stockings on Fireplace, Console Table or Open Shelving
Place Stockings in a row across the hearth of your fireplace, shelf or an open console table. You can even hang these loosely on the wall if you don’t have a surface to hang them from.
You can make very inexpensive DIY stockings out of simple materials from Joann’s or Michaels, but if you are not the ‘crafty type’, you can easily get some from Target or Home Goods. If you are looking for a customized stocking, I would look on Etsy.
Designer hack: I use 3M hooks to hang them, so I can remove the hooks easily after Christmas.
Swag Greens at Horizontal Surfaces, Doorway Headers and Mirrors
An easy way to bring the holiday season in is through greens. This can be sways, garlands, wreaths or table displays of conifer tree branches. If this includes pine cones, berries and other natural elements like dried citrus, it will feel even more intentional and cozy.
Depending on your budget and a few other considerations, you may want to use real greens, but there are also many quality faux greens that can be used year after year.
To top off the beautiful natural greenery, I suggest adding lighting wrapped around the greenery to add that holiday sparkle!
Lighting
Adding Christmas lights to the interior of your space will make your space feel welcoming and cozy during the holidays.
Whether you add lighting to the hearth, a Christmas tree or open shelving with décor, you will not regret it and is a very budget friendly way to decorate for the holidays as there are a million options out there now.
Natural Element Finds
I often gather acorns, pine cones, lichen, greens, leaves and other natural elements while I am out walking in the parks and woods with my family.
These can be used in a simple clear or holiday bowl and creates an additional holiday feel on a console table, dresser or kitchen island.
Vignettes
Small vignettes of a few simple holiday décor items will transform your space quickly.
You can place things in groups of 3 or 5 on top of a platter, tray, cutting board or book(depending on the space and purpose), and you have created a vignette!
Another example of a vignette is a candle, small tree and a vase with greens on top of a book.
I like to use different heights when choosing which elements will go together to create the vignette and I often play around with options prior to landing on the final display of everything.
Keep it simple and have fun!
Again, decorating for the holidays should be a fun ‘task’. It should not be something you dread doing and should be an easy switch from fall without a huge overhaul every year.
